Downtown Las Vegas: Alive & Grooving!

Marquee
Fremont Country Club
Fremont East District, Las Vegas -
A hip new music venue with state-of-the-art recording capabilities opened its doors on March 6 in previously unhip downtown Las Vegas. Located across from the El Cortez Hotel, it's the second venue to open inside a building that Metro police once used for its fingerprinting The Backstage Bar and Billiards opened last year on the building's west side. Both are owned and operated by impresarios Carlos "Big Daddy" Adley and his wife Ava Berman.

Nick Holliday of Vegas Chatter rates the FCC concept as... "awesome. Bringing 1,000 people downtown to see a show will do wonderful things for the local economy. It will expose all new people to the neighborhood and what it has to offer."

The 10,000-square-foot Fremont Country Club, Adley mused, is "Tex-Mex swanky chic meets space cowboy." That theme encompasses cow-skin ceilings, antler chandeliers and chrome horseshoes.

Rock, blues and alternative music will grace the club's stage three to four nights a week.

"We're not going to be doing local garage (band) nights, Adley said. "Not going to happen."

Current mayor Carolyn Goodman and her husband, former mayor Oscar Goodman, gave an unofficial Las Vegas stamp of approval to the Fremont Country Club.

Advantage: Blackjack

Nathaniel Tilton is a world class blackjack player with a story to tell. His book The Blackjack Life, is a compelling read detailing his start from being an average Joe, to learning an authentic skill, to honing that skill into a finely tuned craft that afforded him an incredible array of fantastic experiences that he adeptly shares in his truly excellent book. Read the entire interview here:

Several years ago, I met and briefly consulted with author Nathaniel Tilton whose book The Blackjack Life, recently hit the stands. To say the least, our time together was one of the most interesting I've had in my writing career.

In Nathaniel's own words, here are some of the things that grabbed my interest in the oft-misunderstood though thoroughly fascinating world of card counting. All are excerpts from the above interview on thepogg.com:

"If more investors approached things with a mindset of getting to the long-term, like so many good advantage players do, they’d have a lot more success."

"Most students come to me with a desire to “win big” and believe that their skill set is better than it actually is. So I have to temper both by managing their expectations with how volatile the game is and how much more work they need to put in. My advice is always the same, though. If they want to get great, they have to put in a lot of practice. The edge in this game is so slim that each skill involved in counting cards needs to be incredibly sharp."

"Any pro will tell you that there’s not one strategy in my book that was new to the blackjack community. But what was different about our system was how we moved in and out of various strategies within a playing session. We felt like if we could move from back counting and wonging, to big player call-ins, to gorilla big player signaling at the table… all within one session… it would be difficult to detect."

"I realized that so many books either focus on the experiences of big teams or the science of solo play. I wanted to highlight the value of small team play in a way that would appeal to both students of the game and casual readers."

"Blackjack subject matter can be intimidating for people, especially those who are new to the game. I think my book shows that you don’t need to go to MIT to be successful at it. You just have to have a relentless enthusiasm."

"Here we were, being wined and dined, going to big fights and shows, staying in luxurious suites, and being driven around Vegas in a limo, only to come back to a Boston morning commute (which is miserable), a 9-to-5 job, and lunch in the office park’s cafeteria. There’s some culture shock. And I wanted so badly to tell my stories to friends, but it always felt like it would sound like bragging. So I mostly just kept it all to myself."

"I specifically withheld certain techniques from the book that we used, just in case I returned to the game. So writing the book didn’t mean that I couldn’t return to playing some day.

The Blackjack Life is a story for the expert, novice and anyone curious about the enigmatic life of card counting. Check it out on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Blackjack-Life-Counting-Teamwork-Clandestine/dp/1935396331. By the way, this is NOT a book on how to count cards but rather a book about a card counter's experience.

Online gambling: New Jersey's Christie ready to give thumps up

New Jersey governor Chris Christie
To date, online gambling is legal in only 2 states: Nevada and Delaware. But favorable tax rate increases for such wagering may soon be inacted by the New Jersey legislature. That would make online gambling tax revenue a more favorable source of income than from brick and mortar establishments. Various sources report that Christie has made it abundantly clear he’s ready to sign a similar bill into law if the New Jersey Legislature raises the proposed tax on online gambling from 10 percent to 15 percent.

In addition to seeking online gambling revenue for his state, Christie is also fighting to make New Jersey only the fifth state in which sports gambling is permitted. (Betting on sports is considered illegal under federal law except in Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon.)

Black Power in Bermuda

Investigative Journalist Mel Ayton Pens Book about Intrigue, Assassinations and
Black Power in Bermuda

Justice Denied – Bermuda’s Black Militants, the ‘Third Man’ and the Assassinations of a Police Chief and Governor is the first full account of the 1972/1973 assassinations of Bermuda’s governor, Richard Sharples, and police chief, George Duckett. The book includes a Foreword by Dr. Carol Shuman, a former journalist with the Bermuda Sun and Mid Ocean News.

During the 1970s, a black power organization in Bermuda, which modeled itself on the American Black Panthers, conspired to bring about social change “by any means necessary,” including assassination. The struggle for equal rights in Bermuda during this period both imitated events in the United States and was heavily influenced by them. This is especially true for the role American black militants played in encouraging Bermuda’s youth to challenge the white power structure on the island. Bermuda became the first nation to suffer the violent effects of the importation of 1960s-style American Black Power militancy. As a result, Governor Sharples, Police Chief George Duckett and others were murdered.

Justice Denied points the finger of guilt at a faction of the black militant group led by the ‘Third Man’, who controlled the convicted assassins. The author names the Bermuda businessman, a convicted drug dealer who assisted the assassins in financing their political aims through drug deals and bank robberies. Ayton also concludes that the real story about the assassinations was ‘whitewashed’ by consecutive Bermudian governments in the interests of racial harmony.

This investigative book is based on interviews with police officers involved in the investigation into the assassinations and murders, as well as interviews with prison officers familiar with two members of the assassination team. Additional material for the book was gleaned from the previously secret Scotland Yard murder files, British Foreign Office files, court records, newspaper archives and interviews with the Bermudian governor’s widow.

Paul Donnelley, author of 501 Most Notorious Crimes, says of Justice Denied, "Murders in paradise... Mel Ayton has proved in previous books that he has a consummate skill for unraveling the facts behind conspiracies or debunking them where they don't exist (JFK, RFK, MLK to name but three). His latest book is no exception. It reads like a thriller, but every word is true and his telling of racism, riots, murders, and cover-ups on Bermuda makes this an unputdownable page-turner."

Check out Seth Ferranti's new book:

Gorilla Convict

Gorilla Convict is a selected compilation of Seth’s work that has appeared on his long running blog at gorillaconvict.com. Online since 2005, the blog gives the scoop on street legends, the mafia, prison gangs, hip-hop and hustling and life in the belly of the beast.
What makes this collection so unique is that Seth writes his blog and stories from his cell block in the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he has spent nearly two decades in prison. He founded the Gorilla Convict website from prison, and his intriguing and amazing stories have created a large and dedicated audience from prison.
The book gives the reader real, raw and in your face stories that have not been written from the mainstream news media point of view. They are written by a man who understand the criminal and convict codes and who lives and resides with the men he writes about in the belly of the beast. This collection of crime, prison and street lore is as inside as you can get.
